Minister for Planning and Housing, Anthony Roberts together with Deputy Premier John Barilaro were in Coffs Harbour this morning along with Member for Coffs Harbour, Andrew Fraser to launch the North Coast Regional Plan 2036.
The NSW Government’s vision for the North Coast is to create the best region in Australia to live, work and play thanks to its spectacular environment and vibrant communities.
“I am excited by the Government’s initiative because not only does it protect and promote the natural beauty of the region, but it aims to turn it into an economic powerhouse,” Member for Coffs Harbour, Andrew Fraser said today.
The North Coast Regional Plan 2036 is a blueprint which will guide the planning priorities and land use decisions in the region over the next 20 years.
“As well as protecting the region’s stunning coastline and natural environment, this plan will create more jobs, deliver vibrant communities and provide greater housing choice for people living on the North Coast,” Mr Roberts said.
Mr Roberts said the popularity of the area was such that the plan was needed to support growing communities in the north coast region where by 2036, the population of the entire North Coast is projected to increase by more than 75,000 people.
Key statistics to note for the North Coast:
Housing – More than 46 000 new homes needed to cater for population growth
Tourism – This region is the third most popular Australian tourist destination by overnight stays
Regional Airport Passengers – There has been a 250% increase in passengers between 2006 and 2016
Agriculture – The gross value of agriculture from this region equalled $930m between 2014-2015
George Cecato in attending the launch said, “the opportunities for the region are enormous and this plan provides a good platform and framework to grow the region into the future”.
Coffs Harbour, along with Port Macquarie, Lismore and Tweed Heads is one of four regional centres recognised in the plan that will play an important role in delivering more homes, jobs and services.
