Last weekend we all headed to the polling booths yet again.

However, this time it was for the local council elections to vote on who should be mayor and our councillors for the next three-year term.

This time there is a number of candidates running for the position of mayor, for me this is the most candidates I have seen campaigning for the top job since I arrived on the Coffs Coast nine years ago.

I have also seen projects like the Jetty Foreshores finally get approved, after many different parties over many years have been protesting against it.

Increased infrastructure in regards to detention basin to reduce flooding has occurred.

Upgrading of the CBD area and modification to Harbour Dr.

Upgrades to the Coffs C.ex International Stadium, which has assisted in us securing sporting events that have assisted in the growth of tourism for the city.

There have been a number of interesting decisions come from our elected councillors over the last three years many of which have unfortunately damaged the reputation of our wonderful city.

This has led to a number of organisations including the local Chamber of Commerce having to lobby and convince our Councillors to rescind motions.

Those of you in the community who have been to council meetings over the last three years, have noticed that there has not always been a unified approach to the decision making process of our councillors.

We need our mayor and councillors to be united and progressive, so that we can make the Coffs Coast the best it can be, as well as being fit for future generations.

What we do not need is another three years of councillors with hidden agendas stifling the prosperity of our great city.

We need a council to have a vision that will support project that will our allow our city to progress and find ways for projects to be funded (there is always a way).

Yes, we need a multi entertainment centre. Yes, we need to ensure that the correct use for the fishing club is put forward.

Yes, we need a working port. Yes, we need to maintain a balance between environmental sustainability and development.

But let’s see if they can all work together to make it happen? So I throw out the challenge to our newly elected council.

Prove to the community that has placed them in office, to put the community first and be united, progressive and make decisions for the greater good of the Coffs Coast.
